Wilsons Promontory

This week I went to WIlsons Promontory in Victoria. Wilsons Prom is the southern most tip of Victoria. I went camping for 5 days, scuba diving, and hiking.

Friday:

I left from my apartment with a member of the Underwater Club. We picked up the boat on the way down to Wilsons Prom. We got there in the evening, set up our tents, had dinner, and then went to bed so we could wake up at 7am the next morning. As I was putting up my tent (one I rented), I realized it was missing the piece that goes over the tent to keep the rain out. Thankfully, someone had an extra tent about the same size as mine. So instead of tearing mine down and putting up the spare one, we just borrowed the piece we needed and made it fit to my tent...big mistake later.

Saturday:

I woke up at 7am this morning had breakfast and geared up for a day of scuba diving! As I was setting, I found out that I left my regulator at home in America! Not cool! But the Underwater Club has spare regulators, so I was saved! Once we were geared up, we had to actually push the boat into the water from the beach. I have never done that before or seen it done before, but it was actually easier than I though it would be.

The dive was amazing! the visability was very clear and the water was pretty flat, so there wasn't a lot of waves. I put sunscreen on at least 4 times today and still ended up sunburnt. The sun is really intense here. Once we were done diving, we had to push the boat back out of the water and ont to the trailer. Again, this was easier than it looked.

The one thing better than a great dive is the hot shower we got to take afterwards. Eventhough the air is warm, the water was not. So getting out of my cold, wet wetsuit and into a hot shower t get all of the salt off was amazing.

Sunday:

So....remember when I said that my tent decision was a big mistake? Well this is why. On Saturday night, a storm came thorugh. The winds were intense and they kept catching my tent wrong because the cover to keep the rain out was not exactly connected propperly since it wasn't built for it. I didn't sleep the entire night because I was waiting for it to collapse. At least it waited till about 7am to collapse. It was at least light outside so I could see and there were people awake to help me tear down my tent and move into another one.

Needless to say, we couldn't dive today. Even when the storm passed, the water was too choppy to even get the boat into the water. So once the storm cleared, I collected sea shells that had washed up on the beach and took a long hike up the mountains. We were camped out by Norman Beach, but I hiked over to Squeaky Beach to check it out. It was totally worth the walk. They call it Squeaky Beach because the sand squeaks when you walk on it. It was awesome!

Monday:

The water was still a little choppy, but wasn't so bad that we couldn't get out for a dive. We pushed the boat back into the water from the beach and headed to Eagles Beak and swam through the corkscrew tunnels under the island. Even thought the water was choppy on top of the water, it was very calm and clear under.

Other than diving, I spent time hiking and relaxing with some of the other members of the Underwater Club. It was just simply a beautiful day.

Tuesday:

Today we got up, had breakfast, and packed everything up except our gear. We decided to go on one more dive before we had to leave. We headed out to Skull Rock today. This was by far the best dive of the trip! We got to swim with seals! They would swim right up to you and around you. They were awesome to get to see up close. They are really goofy on land but so amazingly graceful underwater. This dive had quite a few different types of fish swimming through the coral too. I even saw a blowfish expand in the water. It was pretty funny looking. After our dive, we had another one of those lovely hot showers and then headed home.

I am so happy I got to go on this trip and that I survived the weather. Haha.

Norman Beach

Norman Beach

This beach was so beautiful. It was encased between to mountainish areas on the sides. It was my favorite place to relax.

Feet and waves

Feet and waves

The water is actually pretty chilly here.

My little friend

My little friend

I think he looks really cute but then I look closer at him and he just looks like a freaky spider.

Creaky trees

Creaky trees

These trees make the weirdest creaking noise. They also make me think of the Fire Swamp from the Princess Bride. The wombats even look like Rodents of Unusual Size.

Beautiful ocean

I had so much fun climbing on the rocks and watching the water splash. Although it was pretty scary when the wind would blow hard or the waves would crash to close for comfort.

Rainbow!

Rainbow!

There was almost a double rainbow after the horrible storm that knocked over my tent came through.

There is me scuba diving!

Such Bright Colors

Such Bright Colors

If I am not mistaken, this is a Nudibranch, which is an underwater slug. Much prettier than the ones above water, aren't they?

Here is one of the sea lions we got to play with underwater. They are very goofy on land but so beautifully graceful under the water.

A big thanks to Natalie for all of the amazing pictures underwater!
